The inspiration for this watercolor was a tree that seemed to be “out of place, found in a field where no other tree like it was seen. It was mid-September and the leaves were brilliantly crimson. Walking to it and underneath, it became a canopy of leaves like a huge umbrella. There was a spring very nearby. Hanging down were large, spiny fruit-like pendulums. On the ground where their husks. We took some of these husks home and large “nuts”
were inside as the husk opened when dried. The mystery of the identity of this tree was solved by our county extension agent: a horse chestnut. In England, they are called “conker” trees. This watercolor was juried into the national juried watercolor show, “Watermedia 2016”, Montana Watercolor Society.
