In my series of watercolors dealing with thistles, I was working with arbitrary colors but paying attention to realistic shapes. I liked the thicket of thistles’ complexity. Each painting in this series seems to progress in emotional quality, largely due to the color choices. In this one, the colors of fall are apparent. When the stems and thorns pass through summer and dry into autumn, the plant is more like a skeleton but still, the thorns are terribly sharp. Not being a rancher or farmer, I appreciate them more for their wild beauty.
