This watercolor, overlaid with watercolor crayon, depicts the cliff tombs in Dalyan, Turkey. The Lycian tombs date back to roughly 400 B.C. “These tombs were carved directly into the rock face, usually into a cliff, which makes them an amazing sight to behold. It is said that the Lycians believed that a mythical winged creature would carry them off into the afterlife, which is the reason for the position of their tombs on cliffs.” From AncientOrigins.net
I was fortunate to have visited Turkey in 1997 and was able to paint these on site. That night, a full moon came up over the river and dazzled us by lighting the tombs with moonlight.
